Our History
History of Synergy FCU
Founded in 1980
Thanks to Valero Energy Corporation, Synergy FCU began operation on February 20, 1980 as Valero Federal Credit Union. The credit union started in a small office on the 3rd floor of the Valero Towers located at 530 McCullough.

Leo Jordan : President/CEO 1986-1997
Sam Stull : President/CEO 1997 to 2005
Sean Murphy : President/CEO 2005 to present
In 1980, with a staff of 4 employees, 1,340 members and assets of $1,433,927, SFCU began to plant its roots in the community. As the credit union staff increased, more services and conveniences became available to the membership.
The main branch of the credit union is located in the Valero corporate building in San Antonio, TX. SFCU continued to grow and the following branches were opened:
In 1985, Corpus Christi Valero Refinery
In 1997, Texas City Refinery
In 1999, Houston Refinery
In 2009, Port Arthur Refinery
Synergy Federal Credit Union has a staff of 34 employees. Our membership has increased to 10,000 with assets of $150,000,000.
On April 4, 2011, Valero FCU changed it's name to Synergy FCU. Synergy FCU has gone through many changes throughout the years but the one thing that has not changed is we are here to: Service our members... First, Last, Always.
Credit Union Accomplishments:
One of Synergy Federal Credit Union's greatest accomplishments is the fact that we have support by our original select employers group, Valero Energy Corporation. New employees are introduced to the credit union as part of the benefits offered to them. They know from the beginning that they are eligible to join Synergy FCU. We appreciate the cooperation Valero Energy has given to SFCU and the great potential of membership SFCU has gained from this company.
We are growing by leaps and bounds every day, and it is a new challenge we look forward to. We listen to what our members are looking for from a financial institution, and we work on servicing them in a professional yet friendly manner. We are here for our members not for profit, but for service. If our members are satisfied with our services then that is an accomplishment we are proud of.
