Synergy FCU is continually working to ensure our members have the most up-to-date security measures to help protect your accounts from getting hacked.
Starting October 17, 2024, we are updating the security for logging into online banking and the app.
What will not change. You do not have to set up a new username and password. The one you have now will still work.
What change will you see? Once you do the quick initial set up, you will use your username and password to log in, which will generate a multi-factor code (MFA code) to your phone or email. You will enter the MFA code and then be security logged into your online banking.
Why are we doing this? Having a MFA code is an extra layer of security to help prevent unauthorized access to your account.
What do I have to do? The first time you log in, starting October 17th or later, you will do a one-time set up. You will be asked to set up 5 security questions. You'll then set up which phone number(s) and email(s) you would like your MFA code to go to. This is the entire set up. Once this is set, you'll simply log in and enter your MFA code to access your account.
I do not want the MFA code! We apologize for the initial inconvenience this will cause while you set up the MFA requirements, but this extra layer of security it critical to helping prevent fraudsters from gaining unauthorized access to your account and is now a requirement of our system.
Never give your MFA code to anyone else. If you are working with a credit union staff member about your online banking and/or accounts, we will never ask you for the MFA code. If someone is asking you for that code, immediately end your conversation and call the credit union at 888-272-8228 to report the incident.
Ways to protect your accounts.
- Inside online banking, go to Settings, Security and Alerts, then Alerts. You can set up various triggers to alert you to activity on your account.
- Inside the app, go to either Manage Alerts or click the Cards icon. This opens up Card Center. You can set alerts, turn your cards on/off, set location restrictions, and set travel alerts for your cards.
Set a call-in password.
- If you call the credit union, the first thing we will do is verify we are talking to you and not someone impersonating you. The easiest way to do this is to set a call-in password. It's like having a secret word so we know it's you.
Take steps to be secure.
- Never sign into your accounts on public wi-fi.
- Do not write your PIN on your debit card.
- Do not share your PIN with anyone who is not on your account, including members of your family.
- When using an ATM or payment terminal, cover your hand as you type in your PIN.
- Have a passcode or use biometrics to lock your phone.
- Sign out of online banking before walking away from a computer.
- Do not have your username and password in an easy to find location, like a post-it note attached to your computer screen.
